Just over 60 km from Córdoba, in the middle of the sierras chicas, is this estancia, which holds a strong historical and architectural legacy.
Just over 60 km from Córdoba, at the beginning of the northern part of Córdoba, lies Ascochinga, a town as famous as it is renowned for the peaceful lifestyle of its inhabitants, who ride horses through its streets, and for the beautiful nature that surrounds it.
Just 4 km from Ascochinga is a place that, since the 19th century, has held an important place in the country's history: Estancia La Paz, the spot chosen by former President Julio Argentino Roca for his vacation. Today, the property is called Pueblo Estancia La Paz.
The historical legacy of this stately and exclusive destination tells us that, in addition to the owner of the house, other illustrious Argentine politicians and leaders passed through here, such as Nicolás Avellaneda, Bartolomé Mitre, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Carlos Pellegrini, Ramón J. Cárcano, Figueroa Alcorta, and Juárez Celman, among others.
It encompasses 500 hectares of mountains, valleys, and plains, of which 268 hectares are designated as green spaces and a nature reserve, crossed by the Ascochinga River for 7 km. Highlights include the historic center and its emblematic exotic park, designed by French landscaper Charles Thays in 1901, distinctive symbols of Estancia La Paz since the late 19th century.
The property belonged to Estancia Santa Catalina, now a World Heritage Site along with the Jesuit properties in the area.
Over the years, Santa Catalina, which had an area of more than 60,000 hectares, was gradually divided into subdivisions, and in the first half of the 19th century, a section of 8,500 hectares known as the "Corral de Piedra" estate passed into the hands of Tomás Funes, a prominent politician of the time, who began construction of the main structure of Corral de Piedra in 1830. Undoubtedly, the estancia's period of greatest splendor took place under the leadership of two-time Argentine president Julio Argentino Roca. It was also the former president who commissioned French landscaper Charles Thays to design the majestic 100-hectare park with its artificial lake.
